Preheat the oven to 180 C / 350 F (160 C fan). Line a 20x20 cm tin with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on two sides.
Melt the butter, brown sugar, and golden syrup together in a saucepan over low heat, stirring often, for 4 to 5 minutes until the sugar dissolves.
Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the oats and salt until every grain is coated and glossy.
Tip the mixture into the lined tin. Press it down firmly and evenly with the back of a spoon, right into the corners.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the edges are golden brown and the center still looks soft and slightly underdone.
Cool in the tin for 20 minutes, then score into 12 bars while still warm. Let cool completely, 1 to 2 hours, before lifting out and cutting through fully.
