Ingredients

For the Dough:
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk about 110°F
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp melted butter
Optional Glaze (if you like it sweeter):
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp milk

Method

Step 1: Activate the Yeast
  1. In a small bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until bubbly and foamy.
Step 2: Make the Dough
  1. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Stir until it forms a dough, then knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 3: First Rise
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Step 4: Shape the Dough
  1. Punch down the dough and roll it into a 10x12-inch rectangle. Brush the top with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with the cinnamon sugar mix.
Step 5: Cut and Layer
  1. Cut the dough into strips, then stack them and cut into squares. Arrange them slightly overlapping in a greased cast iron skillet.
Step 6: Second Rise
  1. Cover again and let it rise for 30 minutes until puffed up.
Step 7: Bake
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 8: Finish and Serve
  1. While warm, brush with more melted butter and sprinkle extra cinnamon sugar on top. For extra sweetness, drizzle with glaze before serving.

Notes

  • Don’t rush the rising time — it’s what makes the bread soft and fluffy.
  • If you don’t have a cast iron skillet, you can use a round cake pan instead.
  • This bread tastes best fresh out of the oven, but leftovers can be warmed up easily in the oven or microwave.
  • For a deeper flavor, use brown sugar instead of white in the cinnamon sugar mix.
  • Serve it with coffee, hot chocolate, or a warm mug of cinnamon milk for the perfect morning treat.
